Bridge Rectifier

The maximum RMS input-line current is given by Equation 37:

Equation 37. GUID-3254DC00-1D85-4D22-B941-F208A22E8E79-low.gif

The peak input current is given by Equation 38:

Equation 38. GUID-1320281B-6D44-4DB3-90FA-24C19322D03B-low.gif

The maximum average rectified line current is given by Equation 39:

Equation 39. GUID-03DF5590-1FBE-48F9-8DFD-1BA6935C03C5-low.gif

A typical bridge rectifier has a forward voltage drop VF of 0.95V at Iin_pk. The maximum power loss in the rectifier bridge can be conservatively estimated by Equation 40:

Equation 40. GUID-47332253-FCDE-4C6C-B807-DB90E3706EEA-low.gif

The bridge rectifier must be rated to carry the full line current plus any anticipated line-surge peaks. The bridge rectifier also carries the full inrush current as the bulk capacitor COUT charges when the line is connected. The voltage rating of the bridge is recommended to maintain suitable margin to the maximum anticipated peak input voltage including AC-line swells.
