Power Switching Reference Design for Set Top Box

TIDA-01451

Design files

Overview

The TIDA-01451 reference design’s functionality emulates the power distribution of Set Top Boxes. By using integrated load switches to control power rails, each rail can be turned on or off depending on the needs and wants of the user. Turning off rails that are not being used reduces power loss and facilitates meeting energy compliance standards, such as Energy Star. An eFuse placed at the input can manage Hot Plug transients and protect downstream DC/DC converters from an input voltage that is too high or too low, reducing end equipment return rate.

Features
  • A fully featured power tree for common loads in STB allows for appropriate selection of load switches and DC/DCs in system design
  • Current limiting on the HDMI port provides necessary protection for the 5V rail
  • Switching unused loads off results in higher system efficiency and a lower standby current for meeting requirements such as EnergyStar
  • Load switches offer a smaller solution size and lower component count when compared to a discrete MOSFET solution
